Martin Lee Anderson

Before 14-year-old Martin Lee Anderson was locked up in a military-style youth camp in the Florida Panhandle this week, he  told his mother he would 'do what I've got to do' and come home a changed man.
Martin never returned home.

Why You Ask?

A few hours after Martin was booked into the Bay County Sheriff's Office Boot Camp in Panama City on Thursday, January 5th, 2006, officers used 'force' when they said he became 'uncooperative.' Martin stopped breathing and was pronounced dead at about 1:30 a.m. Friday at a Pensacola hospital.
'My son walked in there, and they carried him out in a black bag,' said Martin's mother, 36-year-old Gina Jones, of Panama City. ``It's wrong.'

A videotape  (snippet) shows guards brutally beating a boy at a military-style boot camp for juvenile delinquents not long before the teenager died, two lawmakers said Thursday.

video shows the entire footage.  NOTE:  Be patient, this video is very lengthy and takes time for the feed to download while it's playing.  During the footage with Martin, the guards and the nurse, the camera pans away several times so we don't know what is going on out of the view of the camera.  Another important fact that needs to be explained is WHY didn't the NURSE order the guards to take Martin inside the building for medical screening when it's obvious that Martin was having difficulty standing on his own but they continued trying to get him to walk until it becomes apparent that Martin is lifeless and non-responsive.   ( This is a must see Video )

Martin Lee Anderson, 14, died Jan. 6, 2006 at a Pensacola hospital, a day after he entered the camp because of an arrest for theft.

Anderson complained of breathing difficulties and collapsed during exercises that were part of the entry process at the camp, which was run by the Bay County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities have said he had to be restrained when he became uncooperative during the workout.

Autopsy: At least doc got gender right

The good folks of Panama City can rest easy, as long as they don't die.

Dr. Charles Siebert has renewed his license to practice medicine.

He's the medical examiner who recently ruled that 14-year-old Martin Lee Anderson expired of ''natural causes'' after being kneed, choked and punched by guards at the Bay County Boot Camp.

Previously, Siebert had signed an autopsy report on a woman named Donna Reed in which he described her appendix, gallbladder, ovaries and uterus -- organs that had been surgically removed years earlier, according to her mother.

As a bonus, Dr. Siebert also awarded Ms. Reed a prostate gland and two testicles, a mistake he attributed to conducting the autopsy during a storm-related power outage.

Apparently, the lights were working fine when Siebert examined Martin's body.

Boot camp teen died from sickle cell, medical examiner says

Knight Ridder Newspapers

Bay County's chief medical examiner ruled Thursday that Martin Lee Anderson died of natural causes after an altercation with guards at a Panama City, Fla., juvenile boot camp, saying the 14-year-old suffered from a genetic blood disorder, sickle cell trait, that caused him to bleed to death.

But the report by Dr. Charles F. Siebert Jr. is unlikely to ease the mounting tensions surrounding Martin's Jan. 6 death hours after he was restrained by guards at the Bay County Sheriff's Office Boot Camp.

On Thursday morning, North Florida's chief federal prosecutor, U.S. Attorney Gregory R. Miller, announced his office, together with the U.S. Justice Department's civil rights division and the FBI, was launching a federal investigation to determine whether Martin's civil rights were violated at the camp.

Lawyers: Officers won't be convicted in beating

The specter of criminal charges hangs over boot camp officers in the beating of a 14-year-old boy who eventually died. But even if charges are filed, it may be difficult to win convictions.

To the naked eye, the grainy videotape that shows Panama City boot camp officers kneeing, punching and slamming a listless teenager to the ground may look like Exhibit A in a criminal prosecution.

But building a criminal case against more than a half-dozen Bay County sheriff's officers who roughed up the 14-year-old before his eventual death wouldn't be easy.
